ReelBit — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-10-01
ReelBit is a Chrome extension that adds playback controls (scrubber, speed, keyboard shortcuts) to Instagram Reels and videos. This page describes what data the extension does and does not handle.
Data we collect
None. ReelBit does not collect, transmit, sell, share, or otherwise send any personal data to any server. There is no analytics, no telemetry, no remote logging.
Data stored locally
The extension stores a small JSON object of user preferences in chrome.storage.local (a per-browser-profile, per-extension storage area on your device). This includes:
- Auto-advance toggle
- Default playback speed
- Audio-on-load preference
- Date-display toggles (control bar / profile grid)
- Background-playback toggle
- Pin-bar (always visible) toggle
- Watch history toggle
If watch history is enabled (default: on), the extension also stores a list of the last 500 reels you watched for at least 3 seconds: the reel shortcode, the author's username when visible on the page, when you watched it, and its estimated publish date. This list never leaves your device. You can turn it off or clear it at any time from the extension popup.
These values never leave your device. Uninstalling the extension removes them.
A single boolean cache (playig_bg_play) is also written to localStorage on instagram.com so the extension can read it synchronously at page load. This too stays on your device.
Permissions
storage— to persist your preferences across browser sessions.- Host access to
instagram.com— to inject the playback control UI on pages where Instagram displays videos. The extension does not run on any other website.
Third parties
ReelBit does not communicate with any third-party service, including Instagram itself. It only reads and modifies the DOM of pages you are already viewing.
